Thu 26 June 25 - Howard (A day in Maryborough)

Weather: 6 to 20 Deg, Clear with light winds and sunny

An hour long walk at 06:30am with Kev and Jo on a very fresh morning, a great way to start another beautiful day. Back at the van Noel and I had breakfast then I did a bit more admin before we drove into Maryborough for a look around. First stop was a take away coffee and walk through the City Markets coincidentally held every Thursday morning in Adelaide Street. Not much of interest for us to spend on, but we enjoyed checking out the local handmade crafts, food, spices, and some people dressed in historical period dress. The wonderful old buildings also make a great backdrop. We then continued our walk through the Gallipoli to Armistice Memorial in Queens Park - an excellent interactive trail telling the story of the Anzacs. We stopped to let Olli have a run around in the sun on the lawn then continued through Queens Park overlooking the Mary River, and on to the old Bond Store. We've been to Maryborough before and enjoy this lovely old town, unfortunately there appears to be quite a lot more homeless people around but not threatening. Before leaving the city, we had a must visit to the Cistern Chapel, a public toilet block attached to City Hall in Kent St which has been transformed into the most devine dunnies imaginable. After more than 4 hours of wandering the streets of Maryborough, we returned to Howard for the rest of the afternoon, before joining Kev and Jo for sundowners by the fire then dinner. Overall, it was another very pleasant sunny day.

Thu 8 May 25 - Home to Griffith (351km) Weather: 2 Deg at 06:00am at home, mostly clear all day with light winds reaching 18 Deg at Griffith Waiting for the nearby morning school hour traffic to subside, we eventually drove away from home shortly after 09:00am. This trip north to QLD has been delayed a few times, and we're happy to be finally back on the road again with the caravan. First destination is Griffith in the Riverina for a 3-night stay to visit Noeleene's brothers and their family's. Short stops on the way were at the Harden Murrumburrah Mill Silo Art, and life-size bronze statue commemorating the WW1 horse 'Bill the Bastard'. Continuing westward, we stopped at Temora for lunch, then at the Big Tennis Racquet in Barellan, Evonne Goolagong Cawly's birthplace. Day 19: Mon 26 May 25 - Gladstone

Mon 26 May 25 - Gladstone Weather: 19 to 27 Deg, cloudy with a light breeze and 99% humidity - definitely not the winter weather that we are use to at home. My usual morning routine of making Noeleene a cup of coffee in bed while I went for a 5km walk over the Radar Hill trails, then back to Mum's to arrange some medical appointments and sort out telephone issues. Noel and I then drove about 30km out of town to the Calliope River Historical Village, a wonderful collection of buildings and displays from around the district. After strolling around for about 90 minutes, we checked out the nearby Calliope River Free Camps located on both sides of the river. We are leaving Gladstone on Thursday to stay in Yeppoon for a couple of weeks, and thinking about a stopover here for a couple of nights on our way back south. Day 41: Tue 17 June 25 - Gladstone to Bundaberg

Tue 17 June 25 - Gladstone to Bundaberg (234km) Weather: 16 Deg with a light shower in Gladstone to 21 Deg and cloudy in Bundaberg. Olli decided we should wake up at 05:00am, and so we did. I went for a nice long walk before returning to pack up and we were on our way out of Gladstone by 0845am. Our morning coffee stop was at the 'Best Coffee' in Gin Gin - and it was nice. Not sure there is much competition in Gin Gin though. We continued to Bundaberg to our intended overnight stay at the Hinkler Lions Park free camp, and like the two vans that turned into the park in front of us, we drove straight out again. It looked like a tent city with what appeared to be many homeless people, and some who appeared to be alcohol or drug (or both) affected, and litter everywhere. It was disgusting, and it did not feel like a safe place to be. It's hard to believe that the local council have allowed it to continue for so long, because they looked well and truly settled.  We continued to ...
