Tue 17 June 25 - Gladstone to Bundaberg (234km)
Weather: 16 Deg with a light shower in Gladstone to 21 Deg and cloudy in Bundaberg.
Olli decided we should wake up at 05:00am, and so we did. I went for a nice long walk before returning to pack up and we were on our way out of Gladstone by 0845am. Our morning coffee stop was at the 'Best Coffee' in Gin Gin - and it was nice. Not sure there is much competition in Gin Gin though. We continued to Bundaberg to our intended overnight stay at the Hinkler Lions Park free camp, and like the two vans that turned into the park in front of us, we drove straight out again. It looked like a tent city with what appeared to be many homeless people, and some who appeared to be alcohol or drug (or both) affected, and litter everywhere. It was disgusting, and it did not feel like a safe place to be. It's hard to believe that the local council have allowed it to continue for so long, because they looked well and truly settled. We continued to a caravan park about 10km away who, when we called, advised that they had a site available for the night, arriving only to find out that they do not accept pets (even though Olli is still confined to the van). The caretaker did recommend the Wyper Scout Camp about 10km back out of town which we drove past on the way in. At $15 per night, it turns out to be a perfect place to stay, although unpowered, it has hot showers and lots of open space to choose from, it's quiet and feels safe. We set up, then drove into Bundaberg city centre for a walk around, then returned to find someone obviously afraid to camp in the dark on their own, as they parked about an arms length away to our van, despite the vast amount of open space around to choose from. After a relaxing beverage, a hot shower and a nice feed, we settled in for a quiet evening, excited at the prospect of have a fully functional toilet in the van by the same time tomorrow.

Eventually found a spot for the night - the Wyper Scout Camp. $15 per night unpowered, but nice hot showers and plenty of space to choose from. |

Returned from town to find these people parked so close to us - within arms length of our van, despite so much space to choose from 🤷 ... |
