Day 8: Thu 15 May 25 - Nindigully to Taroom
Thu 15 May 25 - Nindigully to Taroom (404km)
Weather: 14 Deg at 06:00am and mostly cloudy all day reaching 25 Deg at Taroom.
We were up, packed and drove away from Nindigully Pub at 08:20am, bypassing St George along the heavy vehicle route before joining the Carnarvon Highway and heading north towards Surat and Roma. We stopped in Surat for our morning sustenance before continuing on to Roma. The road on either side of Surat was in very poor condition, and there was also a lot of road works to contend with. 232km after leaving Nindigully, we arrived in Roma, stopping only to refuel (at $1.65lt it was the cheapest I have paid for years), before continuing towards Taroom via the minor Roma - Taroom Road. I knew that it was sealed, but was unsure of the condition of the road. It turned out to be very good in places, but mostly hilly/undulating and bumpy with a lot of narrow sections, and some nasty dips. There wasn't much traffic to contend with though, mostly trucks and roadwork crews driving in the opposite direction. All in all, it was no worse than some other major roads that I have driven along in QLD and western NSW. There wasn't much to see along the 172km stretch of road, and very few places to pull over, but driving to the conditions, it was a worthwhile detour. We arrived in Taroom at 3:30pm and set up in exactly the same spot at the same free camp we stayed at heading north in 2023, except this time it's much greener and no one else here tonight. Tomorrow, we will point he car towards Nagoorin in the Boyne Valley to visit my brother for a couple of nights before continuing on to Gladstone for a longer stay.
